Morris M46
Morris Yachts chose the evening before the Maine Boat Builders Show in March to unveil plans for the new M46, the fifth in the M Series of sailboats designed by Sparkman & Stephens.
S&S chief architect Brendan Abbott said his instructions were simple: Start from scratch and design a totally new boat that still shares the DNA of the others models in the M series, the M29, M36, M42, and M52.
The result is a stunning and sleek looking boat, from its traditional bow and overhung reverse transom to its long waterline, tumblehome and gentle sheer. Four ports set into each side of the short-trunk cabin house and overhead hatches should let in lots of light below, where accommodations include two cabins with en suite heads, a full galley and a spacious saloon.
One surprise in the new design is a fold-down transom, making it easy to board from a dinghy or go for a swim. The M46 even comes with a Morris-designed inflatable paddleboard that has its own designated locker. The idea behind the design brief was to build a boat for “coastal living.” This would include cruising, occasional racing, and days when you might just want to anchor and enjoy a quiet harbor or cove.
In announcing the new M46, CEO Doug Metchick and Morris President Cuyler Morris said the new boat is the first of several new designs that are part of the company’s five-year plan.
