Each October, schooners of all description gather just south of the Annapolis Bay Bridge for the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race to Portsmouth, Virginia. This year during Cruising World’s Boat of the Year testing, we took break from our duties to swing past the starting line. Boy, what a sight.

Unlimited sunshine, a race on the water and a festive atmosphere ashore entertained the crowds for day two of the Louis Vuitton finals.
For the ninth consecutive year, watchmaker Officine Panerai is sponsoring the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, with venues in Europe, the Caribbean, and New England. If you’re in a port nearby, don’t miss the show—and bring a camera. Photos by Eleanor Lawson.
The OSTAR is a northern crossing of the Atlantic, against prevailing winds, from Plymouth, United Kingdom to Newport, R.I.. The race is organized by the Royal Western Yacht Club in the UK and takes place once every four years. New Englander Jonathan Green finished the race in his Beneteau Oceanis 351, Jeroboam, in 22 days.
Matt Rutherford sailed the Ault from Florida to Annapolis, Maryland, to refit it for a 6,500 mile voyage in the North Atlantic. Rutherford will be collecting atmospheric and oceanic data for the Ocean Research Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research and public education.
Attendance and number of exhibitors were both up at this year’s show, an annual rite of better weather to come in New England.
Take a step back in time with the original owners of Land’s End.
The nonstop solo around-the-world race has been called the “Everest of the Seas.” Like Everest, the Vendée Globe takes prisoners. As the miles left to the finish diminish, so do the number of boats in the race.
