The grueling Velux 5 Oceans Race will kick off from Bilbao, Spain, on October 22. With competitors finalizing their entries, race organizers are expecting a world class showing for the race’s 25th anniversary.
Covering 30,000 miles in six months, racers will stop over in Fremantle, Australia, and Norfolk, Virginia, before returning to Bilbao for the finish. Traditionally the race has attracted a diverse range of Open 60 and Open 50 skippers hailing from Europe, Asia, Australasia, North America, and South America. This year’s race will feature top solo sailors Mike Golding, Alex Thomson, and Bernard Stamm.
