App of the Month: NavPlay
There is no shortage of route planning, navigation, boat log and social media apps, and indeed, the options are almost overwhelming. A new app for iPads called NavPlay is meant to simplify that by combining them all. You can use the app for:
• Route Planning and Navigating – using C-Map by Jeppesen charts and satellite imagery you can use the “Draw Route” feature, which allows you to simply swipe a finger on the iPad screen where you want to go and it makes the route complete with waypoints. NavPlay also automatically downloads Jeppesen weather forecast data to aid in route planning.
• Control – with WiFi and NMEA connectivity to your boat’s network, NavPlay receives real-time data, and you can even control the autopilot with it. With the “Alarm Manager,” “Instrument Manager,” and “Safety Life” features, you can set and monitor alarms, get the status of all your onboard instruments and receive a text message if something’s wrong
• Log – NavPlay automatically updates the “LogBook” and the “Experience Maker” lets you combine all photos, videos and note from your trip with navigation data from the “LogBook” to create a geo-refrenced overview of the trip.
