Over 100 sailors, representing the top fundraisers from Leukemia Cup Regattas throughout the country, and their guests took to the waters off the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach, CA on December 3rd in Harbor 20s and PHRF boats to participate in the 2016 Leukemia Cup Regatta Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson. In addition to sailing, participants learned about the progress being made in fighting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
TNT, a 1D48 owned by Wes Selby, was the winner of the Fantasy Sail Challenge race. Crew members on TNT included John Boyle and Linda Zager from the Columbia Yacht Club, Chicago; Allison Frantz and Trey Rose from the Great Lakes YC, St. Clair Shores, MI; William Jones Jr; Charleston Ocean Racing, Charleston, SC; Ray Leubner, Canyon Lake YC, Lake Canyon, TX; Cruz Schroeder, North Star Sailing Club, Harrison Township, MI; Tom Purdy, Cleveland Yachting Club; and Ted O’Connor, Bahia Corinthian YC. Paul DeCapua of the Bahia Corinthian YC served as race organizer. Ted O’Connor and his wife Connie spearheaded the Bahia Corinthian YC’s efforts to host the 2016 Fantasy Sail, which provided an opportunity for participants to learn more about ideas to help grow their local Leukemia Cup Regattas’ fundraising efforts.
The top 2016 national individual and team fundraisers were recognized during Fantasy Sail weekend:
Matt Cromar, who raised $185,000 for the San Francisco YC Leukemia Cup, and the New Orleans’ Southern Yacht Club’s Leukemia Cup team Zephyr, which raised $126,736 and included team members Hayes Bertholet, Holly Callia, David Erwin, Marty Hewes, Jeffrey and Andrea Huseman, Robert and Jenny Kottler, J. Miles Reidy, Devon Sweeney and Beth Trotter.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Leukemia Cup Regatta is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. Since its inception, the Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised over $58 million for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.
Gary Jobson has served as the national chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta series since 1993. His involvement took on personal significance in 2003 when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He underwent a stem cell transplant and has been in remission since then.
During the Newport Beach Fantasy Sail, it was announced that the 2017 Fantasy Sail with Gary Jobson will take place October 27-29 in Annapolis, Maryland. The weekend will serve as a celebration of Jobson’s 25th year of service as the National Chairman of the Leukemia Cup Regatta series.
