Carol King has sailed the world over (and over) with her husband, Peter, with whom she runs King Yacht Charters. The Kings also partner with CW in its decades-long, successful Adventure Charter series. During these trips, in between organizing and orchestrating, Carol keeps a journal thick with detail. Here are some tidbits from a recent bareboat charter in the Sea of Cortez, a flotilla that will be offered again in February 2013:
“Anchored at Ensenada Grande, watching a fabulous sunset develop … Tomorrow we’ll take a great hike in the cactus forest ….”
Another day: “We are ‘hovering’ so that we can dive and snorkel with sea lions at Isla Lobos. Nearby are two adobe red islets, like rounded bushes, piled 50- to 80-feet high, dusted with white guano. I hear the barking of sea lions, some lounging on the rocks, some snoozing on ledges protected by overhangs. There are hundreds. Everyone is in the water and having a grand time cavorting with them.”
More: “Great sail north and our boat is humming along. Saw a whale breach along the way and now we’re in a pod of maybe 100 dolphins; they’re all around us.
“On to Isla Coyote—a mere rock and home to about 30 fishermen. Pelicans galore wait for their scraps. We buy beautiful lobsters and fresh yellowtail tuna for sushi tonight.”
